A math themed interactive haunted experience created by Matheatre, produced by MathHappens, and operated by Seattle Universal Math Museum. The experience is on-site at the historic Georgetown Steam Plant in Seattle. The cinematic imagery, an homage to one of the greatest movie poster designers of all time (Can you guess who?) is representative of the full-surround experience that is the interactive event itself.

Another marketing campaign for Pony World Theater; this time for a poignant, surreal family drama that both showcases the power of the individual ingredients and reminds us that what makes them special is bringing them together. Cooking live on stage! Around the same time Pony World held a cooking show fundraiser called "Food Fight". Playfully, we went with the Empire Strikes Back logo treatement. Ha!

The sixth volume of Rain City Projects' Manifesto Series (scroll down for more). 6th volume, edited by A. Rey Pamatmat, celebrates the ten-minute play. The design challenge was to find imagery that brings to mind live theater that isn't hackneyed, as well as reference the varied concepts and styles of a book with dozens of different concepts. The answer: subliminal imagery in the lights. I think it came off quite well.

The fifth incarnation of this wildly popular U.S. touring show. This time Isaac Newton and Gottfreid Wilhelm Leibniz compete in reality-show-style challenges that inspire them to invent calculus formulas, all the while singing formula lyrics to standard current pop songs! If you know the songs and memorize the lyrics, you pass the calculus class. Brilliant!

A groundbreaking show in which the audience voted each night on a variety of possible scenes and styles. 19,440 total versions of the script in all! The poster shows the only three set pieces allowed in the original script by Thornton Wilder, turned upside down of course.

A theater company that creates shows based on science and history. There were so many visual ideas. This was our favorite.

The goals of Audacious is to support the advancement of psychedelic therapy. The definition of “audacious” is showing a willingness to take surprisingly bold risks. This logo imagery evokes that bold, daring, abstract and balanced organicity. It evokes the natural orderly professionalism expanding into a psychedelic orbiting cellular universe.

Another cover for Sweet Air Publishing. This novel by Paul Mullin is inspired by his years working in the executive suite of the nation’s largest home loans bank during the run up to the Great Mortgage Meltdown. The Circle meets The Big Short, with a sprinkling of Fifty Shades of Grey tossed in.

Another poster/flyer campaign for Pony World Theatre. What We Were is a story of sisterhood, survival, and healing taking place in a small East Texas town. The youngest sister disappeared seventeen years ago and turns up all these years later in Seattle. Her sisters must uncover the truth and face dark secrets in order to save her. This image evokes overlapping connections of darkness and lightness, hands reaching out and birds flying away.

In El Guindi's award-winning Language Rooms, Ahmed is the quintessential American worker. He's just trying to do his job while navigating the workplace politics of water cooler gossip and Super Bowl parties. Only this job is interrogating terrorism suspects at a top secret compound. A crumpled Arrest Repot seemed quite appropriate for this Pony World Theatre production, performed at a Seattle location where decades of immigrants were sometimes granted citizenship and sometimes detained. You can just make out the Arabic alphabet. Do you know what it says?

To round out Rain City Projects' new identity (scroll down to see the green logo), we unveiled this shiny new web site. It's variable and dynamic on every device, complete with zooms and mouse overlays. Go to RainCityProjects.org to see it in action.

WEDDING INVITATION
life event

After thirty years of marriage, the Jewels out of New Jersey wanted to renew their vows at the Taco Bell Chapel in Las Vegas. The ubiquitous Bell logo, jet black and floating above a deeply rich, creamy background swirl and exploding bright gleam, running down to the superbly classy embossed gold leaf date... it reflects the honor of the event, as well as the tongue-in-cheek personalty of the betrothed. And if you don't "get it", the hot sauce packets on the back will garnish an "oh".

James Fritz's play, critically admired in the UK, follows an unstable young mother who commits an extreme act of protest that, instead of igniting revolutionary fervor, is largely ignored and leaves her life ruined. It's about whether or not to stick to political principles. Pony World Theatre staged the drama's US debut.

LOGO
Identity

I've been designing Rain City Projects' book covers for many years, and was tasked to create a new identity to reflect the modern direction this non-profit is embarking, beginning in 2018. Every iteration -- business card, j-card, poster, etc. -- has a different bold color combination.

The newest Pony World Theatre world-premiere production. American Archipelago takes place in a neighborhood where homes plucked from all over the United States exist right next door to each other -- a high class brownstone in Berkshires right next to a low-income trailer in Tennessee. This Warhol meets Banksy ketchup flag-spill fits this abstract "block party" snapshot of the USA. The most eye-catching image seen on posters and billboards across Seattle, Summer 2017.

Every year A Contemporary Theater publishes anthologies of student plays as part of their Young Playwrights Program. As with previous years, our goal was to create visuals that respect the maturity of the middle and high school writers and reflect the process of playwriting. This years plays are each symbolically represented in the stained glass panels which form the butterfly wings. The butterfly itself symbolizes metaphors within many of the plays as well as the concept of young minds transmogrifying into something beautiful.

LOGO / ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHIC

A new arts space and performance space in Seattle. The request was for something clean and professional, almost corporate, but still with flavor. The opaque ampersand allows for distinct creative patters to bleed through, such as in the business card with the brick behind it.

Once every two years in January, Seattle's oldest and coolest playwright support non-profit organization Rain City Projects holds their annual fundraiser, Ukelooza, an Hawaiian-themed cabaret and auction. It's a sunny oasis in what can be the dismal mid-winter Seattle. Unfortunately, this years event was cancelled. I like the image so much, I had to put it up here. There's a lovely granulated texture on the prints that's difficult to see here.
