A blast from the recent past: 2014. 14/48 Projects produced this summer parks show, performing across Washington. Fun to illustrate with black and white silhouette.

Pony World Theatre had the guts to stage this playful and incendiary play about a genocide in Namibia in the early 20th century. I think this poster evokes the tight ensemble nature of the play while at the same time highlighting the racial tension. I especially like how the mouths are laughing and screaming at the same time. (On a side note: posters these days just don't have the pull they used to. Producers just want so much info and convoluted images crowding the real estate. This harkens back to the good old simple early computer graphic design days, and had a fantastic pull from miles away!)

BOOK COVER

This year A Contemporary Theater asked me to design the cover of their anthology of student plays with a tie-in to their 50th anniversary identity design. This is the result, still a reflection of the vibrant young visions of the young playwrights, but also tying in with the sleek and classy gold and black ACT identity.

Rain City Projects is the Pacific Northwest's oldest and coolest playwright support organization. Bi-annually they publish anthologies of plays. The Manifesto Series is not a "greatest hits" anthology -- each editor has an axe to grind, a chip on the shoulder, a vision of how theater would be better if only it had more of THIS. The editors' introductions have a dynamic layout to communicate their vibrant calls to action. A thousand books are distributed free to theaters and universities in the United States and Canada.

ARTS FESTIVAL CAMPAIGN

Arts Crush was a month long celebration of events in Seattle from every artform known to humanity -- theater, visual arts, dance, circus, literary, and more. I was brought in at the last minute to come up with a visual metaphor for 2013, following a very successful 2012 campaign. Big shoes to fill. I think we did a fine job.

EVENT IMAGE

Once every two years in January, Seattle's oldest and coolest playwright support non-profit organization Rain City Projects holds their annual fundraiser, Ukelooza, an Hawaiian-themed cabaret and auction. It's a sunny oasis in what can be the dismal mid-winter Seattle.

BOOK COVER & LAYOUT

Every year A Contemporary Theater publishes anthologies of student plays as part of their Young Playwrights Program. As with the previous three years, our goal was to create visuals that respect the maturity of the middle and high school writers and reflect the process of playwriting. This time we went with a new metaphor -- the age-old head silhouette, but with an entirely unique explosion of ideas.

Yana Kesala is a phenomenal solo performer and theater producer. Our design meetings tended to veer wildly off target. We'd end up discussing art and theater and travel. (Secret: this is exactly how identity design meetings should go.) When we did get down to brass tacks, superheroes were never talked about, but looking back, it was always alluded to. (Very mysterious.) When I was sketching ideas, this comic book trademark was one of those ta-da moments. "Of course this is perfect." Yana was ecstatic.

WHITE PAPER

Mactus Group brought me in on a very tight time-frame to design and layout this white paper. Layout is an art. A zen art, in my opinion. I love being a layout artist, as you can see from this and from my work with Directions on Microsoft.

RECYCLE SIGNAGE
identity | illustration

The Seattle-based pharmaceutical research company Amgen has a very complex trash and recycling situation. They wanted a simple and elegant system that communicates on every brain input level -- color, shape, text, image, etc. They also wanted the signage to fit the modern art and architecture of their facility. Lastly, the images needed to be instantly recognizable at all sizes, from tabloid hard plastic signage above receptacles to small stickers on individual cubicle cans.

MUSEUM SERIES

Consolidated Works was a truly multi-disciplinary arts gallery in the Cascade District of Seattle. In the massive hanger-like building, as well as storing a gargantuan visual arts gallery, there was also a gargantuan stage theater and separate film theater. But what really made a visit to ConWorks an adventure was the co-ed bathrooms! This design was an oversize brochure/poster for their Suspension Series. They gave me carte blanche -- said, "do whatever you want on the theme." I like this but should have done something really incomprehensible, right?

BOOK COVERS & LAYOUT

Every year A Contemporary Theater publishes anthologies of student plays as part of their Young Playwrights Program. Often the word "young" evokes images of toys and storybooks. And the word "play" evokes images of sports items like footballs and tennis rackets. But these are stage plays written by middle and high school aged writers. Our goal was to create visuals that respect their maturity and reflect the process of writing. These should be books they would be excited to have on their shelves into adulthood. The client and I are very happy with the result. The design for this trilogy was a happy accident. When I designed the first cover in 2010, the client and I loved the bold, dark, dramatic and playful concept so much, we decided to continue the theme for the next few years.

CONVENTION BOOTH

Spectralux engineers and builds navigation systems for the avionics industry. I was brought on by Marketfitz, a design firm in Seattle, to finish up these booth graphics by designing globe graphics to match the already existing style, and then bring it all to the final print and construction phase.
